This post takes me back a few weeks to Neil and my holiday based in Ullapool where we did a bit of Munro bagging – our last walk on 24 May took in Conival (987m, M158) and Ben More Assynt (998m, M141) in lovely warm weather.
Neil did the full tour of both mountains (18.2km, 1,200m). The approach up the glen from Inchnadamph leads first to Conival and then across the ridge to Ben More Assynt. Neil came out by the south east ridge of Ben More Assynt, which is narrow and slightly exposed in places. As for me, I ducked out after Conival returning by the same route as the ascent (14km, 920m) and was glad to have done so – the steep scree slopes and rough ground on the approaches made this our most demanding day’s walking with the descent taking me longer than the ascent! To quote from the SMC’s Hillwakers’ Guide, “..some can run downhill while others hirple, having probably spent too much of their youth running downhill” – the descent certainly had my knees aching!
